College Fund-Raising Project Mushrooms into Kilifi Humanitarian Effort <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>For the past four years Charlotte Dilworth South End
Rotary has been involved in a multi-faceted program to serve the people of
Kilifi, Kenya. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>This project, which had its genesis with a request from
students at Davidson College to "do a literacy project in Kenya' began
with these students attempting to raise $2,500. Little did we realize that
before we were through that "2,500.00" would GROW-through the
participation of other clubs, District Matching Grants and Rotary Foundation
Matching Grants to $181,075.00!<span style='font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Ultimately this evolved into a Thee Phase Project
involving at least 36 Rotary Clubs in Five Districts and
utilizing contributions from individuals in 25 states! The lead U.S.
Clubs were the Rotary Clubs of Vinings, Georgia, Prince George, Virginia and
Charlotte Dilworth South End in Charlotte, NC.<span style='font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal> Phase One was a project that provided 100 computers to
the library and high schools in Killifish, with support
services
$17,500.<span style='font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Phase Two was a program to treat parasites for almost
27,000 kids, plus FULL 4 YEAR SECONDARY EDUCATION for 50 of the poorest and brightest,
both male and female

treating an additional 14,000 kids for parasites and establishing a number of
community nutritional centers

for Humanity’s Re-Store Donations Manager provided our club with a good
overview of what the operation does and pointed out member John

Murphy said the Re-Store profits funded 12 Habitat for Humanity (HFH) houses
in 2009 and that after John put his expertise as a former bookstore owner to
work, Julia’s Coffee Shop and Bookstore provided the profit to fund one
of those houses. He said before John’s input, the coffee shop and
bookstore only provided about $600 a year in profit.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p style='margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt'><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p style='margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt'><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Tim
explained that the two Re-Stores on Wendover and Wilkinson Boulevard take in
donations of appliances, cabinets, furniture, building materials, household
items and sell them to the public. He said the donations are new and
gently-used, good quality merchandise.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p style='margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt'><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p style='margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt'><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The
profits pay for Habitat houses. HFH has build 950 houses in Charlotte. HFH
operates in 90 countries and is currently doing disaster response in Haiti.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

new state director Mitzi Ellis, Past District Governor of Rotary District 7690
and former co-chair of District 7680 Flight of Honor.<o:p></o:p></p>

his duties heading the HonorAir program in North Carolina to run for the
Republic nomination to Congress for the seat currently held by Rep. Heath
Shuler, Democrat. Miller said he has been in the process of handing over the
reins well before he announced his candidacy for a congressional seat two
weeks ago.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=pagpag1><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Mitzi chaired
the first flight out of Charlotte. After she and her family moved back to
Greensboro, she helped create the Triad Honor Flight..<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=pagpag1><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Jeff founded
HonorAir in Henderson County in 2006 and the local chapter flew its first
three flights the following year. Since then, it has become a national
program known as the HonorFlight Network.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=pagpag1><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>HonorAir
gives World War II veterans the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. on a
chartered flight and visit the World War II Memorial, among other significant
landmarks.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:black'>District 7680’s next
Flight of Honor will be this spring. It costs $500 for each veteran who goes
on these charter flights. The funds are raised through donations by
Rotarians in District 7680, gifts from veterans’ organizations,
donations from foundations and the general public. If you have not donated
