David Kirkpatrick Shares Personal Insights
On Living the Civil Rights Movement
David Kirkpatrick at our Jan. 8 meeting presented a program on his personal insights on living the civil rights movement. He continued a tradition that some of our better programs have been presented by our own members.
He said, ?Atlanta Georgia, in the 1960s had the potential for significant physical and economic growth, but it required maintaining calm during the civil rights movement.
He said Atlanta business, political and religious leaders brokered a more peaceful path to integration. His father, Dr. Dow Kirkpatrick, led the religious leaders as author of the ministers manifesto.
Eighty Atlanta ministers issued a statement on Sunday, Nov. 3, 1957 calling for interracial negotiation, obedience to the law, and a peaceful resolution to the integration disputes that threatened Atlanta's moderate reputation. The Ministers? Manifesto, as the statement came to be known, marked an important turning point in Atlanta's race relations.

Speaker Tells Club about Alzheimer?s Association Mission and Services
Lori Walker, Executive Director of the Alzheimer?s Association of Western North Carolina (http://www.alz.org/northcarolina/in_my_community_about.asp), presented a program on her association at our Jan. 15, 2010 meeting.
She explained that her association covers 49 counties in Western North Carolina, and provides services for patients and caregivers. It also supports research. She asked for a show of hands of those present who had a personal connection to someone with Alzheimer?s. Most of those present raised their hands.
Some of our members may not be aware that the change put into the blue CART bucket at the check-in table supports Alzheimer?s research. CART is Coins for Alzheimer?s Research (http://www.cartfund.org/) and it is project of the Rotary Clubs in the Carolinas and Georgia. From donations of those coins, the fund already has distributed $2.8 million through grants to 12 university research programs.
Rotary Offers Avenues for Haiti Assistance

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION
A Donor Advised Fund has been established and is accepting contributions for disaster relief in Haiti. Complete information is available at www.rotary.org/haiti.Information is also available on the Rotary International website home page, www.rotary.org. DISTRICT 7680
The District is providing an opportunity for Rotarians and friends to contribute to disaster relief in Haiti. Contributions would be collected and distributed through the Rotary Club of Gastonia foundation.
Checks should be made payable to:
Rotary Foundation of Gaston County, Inc.
P.O. Box 33
Gastonia, North Carolina 28053
Please indicate in the memo---?Haiti Earthquake? or ?Haiti?
SHELTER BOX USA
Shelter Box USA is a grassroots Rotary club project which has rapidly grown to an international level and responds to disasters such as the one in Haiti by providing self-contained emergency shelter units. Shelter Box USA is a 501(c)3 organization ? donations qualify as a charitable deduction for tax purposes.
You will find more information about Shelter Box USA at: http://www.shelterboxusa.org.
Rotary District 7690 is sending shelter boxes to Haiti. The cost for each ShelterBox is $1,000. The ShelterBox is a ten-person tent designed to withstand extreme temperatures, high winds and heavy rainfall. The box includes a range of survival equipment including insulated ground sheets, mosquito nets and life saving means of water purification. Also included is a basic tool kit and a children?s pack containing coloring books, crayons and pens.
Checks in any amount can be made payable to ?Rotary District 7690? and sent to District Secretary Margaret Padgett, 114 Willoughby Park, High Point, NC 27265, though it is preferable for each club to collect all the checks from its club members and mail them to Margaret. William W. MacDonald became a member of Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary Club in an induction Jan. 22 by President Dale Harrold. Ralph Lovejoy sponsored Bill for membership and introduced him to the club. Bill is a retired physician.
A native Wilmington, DE, he earned his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University and his medical degree from State Univ. of NY Upstate Medical Center at Syracuse. He met his future bride, Jo Ann, while in medical school.
He trained two years in internal medicine in Baltimore and four years in obstetrics and gynecology in Cleveland. During his career he chaired a professional standard/practice board at Carolinas Medical Center and was on the board of a comparable committee at Presbyterian Hospital.
An Eagle Scout, he volunteered with the Boy Scouts to teach first aid. He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.. He also volunteers as a Precinct 74 election worker, along with Ed King, Ralph Lovejoy and Bob Teague.
He retired two and a half years ago. In retirement, Bill and Joni travel extensively. Bill is working on his passion for trout fishing. Later this year he will return to Idaho to such famous spots as Henry?s Fort and Last Chance, Idaho.
He and Jo Ann have a son, Andy, who is an attorney in Salisbury, MD; and two daughters, Nancy, a marketing director for the Speed Channel in Charlotte and Kathy, a physical therapist in Reading, PA.
Bill said his interests are grandchildren, travel, current events, training our Red Doberman puppy Syra, fishing, boating, and relaxing at our Condo in Litchfield by the Sea, SC.
