John's Award
John Barringer Received the Starfish Award from District Governor Karen
Shore
Starfish Award Goes To John Barringer
District Governor Karen Shore presents a Starfish Award to a deserving
Rotarian in each club where she makes her official visit and she presented
the award to John Barringer during her August 28 visit with our Club.
John was nominated by the board of directors and chosen by President Dale
Harrold.
Below is a brief summary of some of the reasons why John was chosen.
? Past President of our club; Paul Harris Fellow.
? As owner of Little Professor Book Center at park Rd. Shopping
Center, was a key and central player in our Bell Ringing project for many
years; he continues as a dedicated Bell Ringer
? John has chaired and served on several vitally important District
Committees that have greatly increased the visibility of World Community
Service, the Rotary Foundation Grants, and he continues to serve as a
resource to all of our District clubs seeking to create international
service projects and secure matching grants
? One of our original USO volunteers, he still serves a shift every
two weeks
? With Habitat, John created a money-making venture (a book store)
for the Habitat RESTORE on Wendover Road. The "intake" to Habitat is in the
thousands of dollars monthly; some months have raised over $10,000/month; he
continues to volunteer weekly at this bookstore
? John has served for many years in the "Friendship Force" as an
ambassador to Charlotte's Sister Cities
? He has been to Bolivia on our oversees mission trips
? John has been a volunteer at Samaritan House
? He served on the initial Steering Committee for the "Flight of
Honor" and a strong continuing supporter
? On just about every Dilworth Club project, John Barringer has been
present since joining the club in '89!

STAR Series Resumes Next Tuesday
STAR starts again in September and will be at Pikes on Tuesday, September
8th beginning at 7:15 am. If you are planning to attend please email Brad
Goforth, bgoforth at aol.com , by FRIDAY afternoon so I can give Pike?s a
count. (Remember, Monday is a holiday so we need the count early).
Former Sen. Dole Sponsors Another
Flight of Honor as Memorial to Her Brother
The September 19 Flight of Honor hasn?t been fully funded yet, but thanks to
the generosity of former U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole a third Rotary District
7680 Flight of Honor has been scheduled for Oct. 20.
Senator Dole's generous donation to the Rotary District 7680 Flight of Honor
is in honor of her brother, a World War II veteran, who passed away in the
spring of 2008. The John Van Hanford, Jr. Memorial Flight will assure that
more Charlotte area heroes will get to see their memorial.
Senator Dole issued the following statement on the John Hanford Memorial
Flight:
?My beloved brother, John, entered the United States Navy immediately upon
graduating from Duke University, just a few months after his 20th birthday.
He served first on the aircraft carrier USS Windham Bay and then on the
world?s largest carrier, the USS Saratoga.
John passed away on April 7, 2008. If he were here, he would
join World War II veterans from his home areas, Salisbury and Charlotte, on
this flight because of his great respect for the sacrifices made by so many
and his tremendous patriotism and love of country. I am the little sister
who idolized him, and I am proud to sponsor an Honor Flight in loving memory
of John.
I remember well the little Wave uniform Lt. Hanford brought me
when he came home to Salisbury on ?survivor?s leave.? Twice the ?Sara? had
been struck by torpedoes fired by enemy submarines and forced to retire for
repairs. Her heaviest damage was suffered near Iwo Jima when she was struck
by seven bombs and five Kamikaze planes. Fires and explosions ripped the
ship as her gunners fought back and her repair crews struggled to control
the damage. The Saratoga survived, but 123 of John?s shipmates gave their
lives and over 300 were injured.
John was from a generation that rarely discussed their war
experiences, but their legacy is clear. They saved America and the world
for freedom and democracy. May generations to come always remember and
thank God for their service and sacrifice.
My heartfelt thanks to the Rotary Clubs of District 7680, the Salisbury and
Charlotte Rotary Clubs, and my friend, Jeff Miller, co-founder of Honor
Flight Network, who will be working with the Rotary District to direct this
flight.?

Client Group, will be the guest speaker at the joint luncheon of Mecklenburg
County Rotary Clubs Tuesday, Sept. 29 at the Blake Hotel.

and will be sharing his knowledge and insights into the why America works,
and how we got to where we are today.
Dilworthians Record Only 221 Hours Of Service
The headline says record only 221 hours because members undoubtedly have
given more service than that since the new Rotary year began July 1. We are
just forgetting to record our service. Let?s all try to be more vigilant
about recording our service hours.

Club Fundraiser Scheduled Nov. 4
Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary Club's fundraiser will be held on
November 4, 2009 and promises to be fun for all. Restaurants will
contribute a portion of their receipts to Dilworth Charities on that date in
exchange for publicity encouraging Rotarians in our District to eat out in
these restaurants. Information about the event will be shared by email and
newspaper.
Dilworthians will be asked to forward an email invitation to their friends,
to eat out at one (or more) of the restaurants included, and to encourage
their friends and family to join them! This year the event will be limited
to fifteen restaurants with the hope that we can make a difference in
increasing the restaurants' sales so that even more will want to participate
next year.
Six of our members currently are contacting restaurants. If you have a
favorite Dilworth restaurant or know a decision maker in a Dilworth
restaurant, please contact Kate Richards (
krichards at carolina.rr.com). If you would
like to design the email invitation which will be sent to the 3,300 District
Rotarians and forwarded to club members' friends and relatives, please also
contact Kate.
Put it on your calendar now - November 4th. Restaurants will be named in a
later email. Thank you so much for your help and your participation!

Good Reading in October Rotarian
The October issue of Rotarian contains some good articles, including one on
?How Rotary survived the Great Depression? on page 44.
The other featured articles are:

cosmopolitan, multicultural city for great food, vibrant neighborhoods, and
four centuries of architecture.
Page 40: ?The bitter and the sweet? Suppose Twitter had been available
during crucial moments in history. Word would have gotten out much faster.
