DilWorth Noting Speaker Says Environment Is Improving, But Region Still Faces Challenges Environmental reporter Bruce Henderson of The Charlotte Observer told the audience at our Oct. 2 meeting that Charlotte?s environment is blessed with a moderate climate, a gentle terrain, plenty of water and recreation from the Catawba River, but we have not always treated the environment kindly. He ticked off some of the unkind treatment to our environment: raw sewage dumped into streams; some streams buried by pavement; industrial air pollution; wetlands filled in; streams straightened into ditches; and toxic chemicals dumped contaminating groundwater. Bruce said in the 1970s the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act helped turn things around, but imposed regulations that Charlotte still struggles with. The Charlotte area has been growing fast and that makes it harder to keep the environment clean. He said Mecklenburg County?s population nearly double 1987-2007, but motor vehicle traffic increased nearly threefold. The number of high ozone days has gone down from 36 in 1987 to 19 in 2007, but the county will not be able to meet the federal ozone standard in 2010 and the new standard will make it even hard. Fine particulates in the air are another rising concern, he said. Air quality standards are getting harder to meet and possible federal sanctions could stop road funding. Bruce said our lake water quality is good to excellent, about the same as 20 years ago, and the amount of bacteria in the lakes dropped 75%. However, he said 73 % of the major Mecklenburg streams are impaired and that there are more than 1,100 contaminated groundwater sites in the county, compared with 60 in 1987. He warned that it is much more expensive to fix environmental problems than it is to avoid them. She passed away Saturday, Oct. 3 in Worcester, Mass. Construction Law Group Honors Fenton Erwin Fenton Erwin was awarded the Evelyn M. Coman lifetime distinguished service award given by the Construction Law Section of the NC Bar Association. The award is given ?to a person who has committed a lifetime of work to construction law and has consistently upheld the highest ideals of his profession; has made a noteworthy contribution in the field of construction law; has a strong record of volunteerism and work within the community; and possesses an exemplary professional record.? In announcing the award at the Annual Meeting of the Construction Law Section at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, the presenter, after mentioning personal and family matters of interest, referred to the large number of Supreme Court cases in which the position Fenton advocated had been adopted by the Court and which established a precedent in construction law; the statutes enacted by the legislature for which Fenton was the principal draftsman; and his being NC Counsel for the American Subcontractors Association for many years. Although established in 2002 there have been only three other recipients of the award. The magazine had this description of how a contractor qualifies for the award, ?The Residential Contractor of the Year represents an elite group: a forward thinking class of residential HVAC contractors who are dynamic and professional in every aspect of their business. The high-quality management of their companies parallels that of many top corporations in the U.S. today. These contractors follow strategic plans and maximize their returns on investment, and are always exploring new ways to improve their operations. Ask your friends and relatives to patronize one of these restaurants on Nov. 4 and to let the manager know they are there to help Dilworth Rotary?s community charitable projects. Rotary District 7680?s 3rd Flight of Honor Gets Huge Welcome Home at Airport More than 100 World War II veterans received a heroes? welcome Tuesday night as the returned from a day in Washington, D.C. on their Rotary District 7680 Flight of Honor. Family, friends and more than 40 Rotarians were there to greet them, cheer them, shake their hands and thank them for their service. They also were greeted by an avenue of flags held by the Patriot Guard and some Boy Scouts in uniform. There also was a high school Junior R.O.T.C. group in uniform. Past District Governor Joe Morris, one of several Dilworthians there, made the estimate of the number of Rotarians. The veterans, ranging in age from 81 to 94 were tired, but delighted with their experience. The restaurants have committed to share a portion of their proceeds from restaurant receipts Wednesday, Nov. 4. In exchange, our Club is urging its members, other Rotarians, family and friends to eat at one of the restaurants on Nov. 4. The restaurants are: 300 East at 300 East Boulevard, Brixx at 1801 Scott Avenue, Dilworth Neighborhood Grille at 911 East Morehead St., Greek Isles Restaurant at 200 Bland St., and La Paz Restaurant at 1910 South Boulevard. Sullivan's Steakhouse and Outback in Dilworth have helped in other ways. Kate Richards, chair of the club?s fund-raising committee, said, ?We hope all our members and other Rotarians will eat at one of these restaurants on Nov. 4 and let the restaurant management know they are there to support our club?s Dilworth Charities. We want this to be beneficial to the restaurants and our charities.? The club?s Dilworth Charities is a 501 (c) (3) organization under IRS regulations and donations are tax deductible under the federal tax code.. You can help the cause by e-mailing all of your friends and asking them to eat at one of the restaurants. Also ask them to let management know that they are there to support our club?s fund raising. If you send the same e-mail to multiple addressees, put them in the BCC line. Otherwise many anti-spam programs will block e-mails with multiple addressees. DilWorth Noting Follow-Up to Program on USO Some members asked after the USO program how to donate to the USO. President John Falkenbury of the USO of North Carolina, responded by asking your editor to give the web site locations for the information. Information on donating to the USO of North Carolina is at www.uso-nc.org/supportus.html. You can help the USO of North Carolina and yourself by buying an h-Card (usoofnc.schoolheart.com/). The card costs $25 a year and $12.50 goes to the USO of North Carolina. It is good for discounts at Avis, Howard Johnson, Days Inn, Hawthorne Suites, AAMCO, and many other businesses. He said that the troops overseas who are served by USO Arlington also need help. A check only to USO Arlington goes to support troops outside North Carolina. The Dilworthian Needs Backup Editor Lamar Gunter will undergo knee replacement surgery Dec. 2 and will not be able to produce The Dilworthian that week and perhaps the next week. We need a volunteer to take over The Dilworthian at least for that week and possibly two or more, depending on the speed of recovery.
