Dilworthian Editor Seeks Participation to Improve Newsletter
Your editor is asking members of the club to help make The Dilworthian a
more informative and more attractive newsletter. Here are some of the ways
you can help:
* If you are working on a club project ? Habitat, Crisis Assistance,
USO, Social, etc., take pictures and send JPEG versions to Lamar Gunter at
gunter4283 at bellsouth.net.
* If you personally receive a promotion in your job, change jobs,
retire, etc. send Lamar bullet point notes and he will write it.
* If significant family events occur ? children or grandchildren born,
children graduating from high school or college, etc. Let Lamar know.
Again, you don?t have to write it, just provide the information.
* If you or an immediate family member experience an illness or
serious injury or if you know of a club member who does, let Lamar know.
* Send Lamar reminders about STAR meetings, Socials, Habitat work
days, etc.
* If you want to write a story about some aspect of Rotary or our
club?s operations, Lamar will welcome contributions from the members. We
have had a few in the past, but we have had too few contributions
.
Let?s all pitch in and make The Dilworthian one of the best club newsletters
in Rotary.

Thousands Pitch in for Rotarians at Work Day
By Ryan Hyland
Rotary International News -- 9 June 2009
More than 25,000 Rotarians and volunteers from 35 districts worldwide rolled
up their sleeves to improve their communities as part of Rotarians At Work
Day.
Started in 2006 by the late Bob Watson, past governor of District 5340
(California, USA), Rotarians At
Work Day happens the last Saturday in April each year and challenges clubs
around the world to carry out hands-on service efforts in their community.
"It truly is a grassroots project," says Pamela Russell, governor of
District 5340. "The day is a great opportunity to revitalize your club,
bring in new members, and generate publicity for Rotary."
Watson's vision was that by 2014, every club and Rotarian would participate,
says Russell.
"Imagine the impact when all clubs come together and perform community
service projects," she says. "Thousands of people will benefit both
indirectly and directly from just our one-day efforts."
Here are a few of the projects that Rotarians carried out around the globe
on 25 April:
* To emphasize the importance of bicycle safety, 15 clubs in District
1410 (?land Islands; Finland) collected 2,000 knapsacks for bike helmets and
delivered them to local schools.
* Members of the Rotary Club of Vasco da Gama, Goa, India, helped
build two large steel lockers for a school in Chicalim.
* More than 100 Rotarians and Rotaractors from District 9200, which
covers five countries in eastern Africa, planted trees, painted rooms, and
repaired cow sheds for the Morning Star Children's Ministry for orphans in
Nairobi, Kenya.
* A joint effort between the Rotary clubs of Ensenada Riviera, Baja
California, Mexico, and Newport-Irvine, California, provided more than 100
new chairs to a primary school in Francisco Zarco, Mexico. Rotarians also
painted part of the school, cleaned up the patio, and planted trees.
* The Rotary Club of Carlsbad, California, started a sustainable
vegetable garden at a local homeless shelter, allowing residents to grow
their own food. Rotarians also painted several areas of the facility.

Club Website Displays New Look
By Richard Pockat
Club Webmaster
Hackers breaking into the web server for the club?s website accelerated the
need for creation of a new site, now nearly completed. The new site will
have more emphasis on members and club activities and also have easy links
to the newly updated District website and the Rotary International website,
including a newsfeed from RI.
The new site (www.charlottedilworthrotary.org/) has been designed to be more
attractive to prospective members looking for our club and to identify our
club?s geographic location within Charlotte, including links to information
about Charlotte, Dilworth neighborhood and South End.
Our club is active in a number of projects, both for World Community service
and Local Community service. It is planned for more specific information and
photographs to be available on the website about these projects.
The home page will feature the ?Dashboard? with current membership
information. There is also a box that displays the sum of volunteer hours
recorded by the club with a link to the volunteer hours sign-in page. We
have been averaging about 1000 hours recorded per year, but likely many
hours go unrecorded. Please take a few minutes after your volunteer time to
record it on the website.
The bulk of the up-to-date information comes from the Dilworthian, so please
help Lamar out by contributing news.

The Rotarian?s July Issue Launches New Rotary Year
John Kenny, Rotary International President for 2009-2010 sets the tone for
his year in his letter by writing ?The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands.?
Rotary is a worldwide organization, but it is nothing without the ordinary
weekly meetings of Rotarians in their home clubs.
He writes, ?In Rotary, everything we are, and everything we aspire to
become, lies in the hands of Rotarians in their clubs. If our clubs are
congenial and our meetings well run, if our service is carefully planned and
competently carried out, if our members are qualified, honest, and respected
in their vocations and communities, then all of Rotary will thrive.?
He explains that water, health, hunger and literacy will be the emphasis in
the year ahead.
Other items from the magazine?s July contents:
Scot?s honor
John Kenny?s goals, from clean water to attracting new members, are the main
courses of his tenure. Important weekly side dishes are the Falkirk
Football Club scores.
Showing up for life
Bill Gates Sr, talks about raising children, supporting his community, and
the Gates Foundation?s relationship with Rotary. In an accompanying Q&A,
the foundation?s cochair tells us what it?s like having his son as his boss.
Craig?s list
A photo essay brings together a Rotarian from Washington, USA,.and a ?Lost
Boy? from South Sudan, who teamed up to improve a Sudanese village.
There are many other shorter items in the July issue.
