From lgunter at catevo.com Thu Feb 5 11:08:56 2009 From: lgunter at catevo.com (Gunter, Lamar) Date: Thu, 5 Feb 2009 14:08:56 -0500 Subject: [Dilworthian] Feb. 6 issue Message-ID: The Dilworthian (Issues posted at www.charlottedilworthrotary.org) February 6, 2009 Directors Approve David Kirkpatrick For Membership in Dilworth Rotary The club's directors have approved David Kirkpatrick's application for membership. This is the required official notice to members of the club. David's classification is training consultant and Kay May sponsored him for membership. He currently is a member of the Dorchester Rotary Club in Dorset, U.K. Additional biographical details will be in the story about his induction into our club. DilWorth Noting Harding Shinn Leads in Perfect Attendance Harding Shinn, with 44 years of perfect attendance, led 14 Dilworthians who compiled a total of 179 years of perfect attendance. David Hodgkins is runner-up with 36 years. Those with more than a decade of perfect attendance include: Gus Psomodakis, 18; Joe Morris, 17; Jim Stump, 15, Ed King, 13; and John Barringer, 11. Others to whom President Ranjit Rawlley and David Miller presented pins include: Dave Miller, 9; Bob Teague, 7; Gary Barrett, 4; Dale Harrold, 2; Dewey Jenkins, 2; Kay May, 2, and Joe Smith, 1. Attendance Chairman Dave Miller pointed out that these 14 perfect attenders represent 20% of the club members. He said, "While the club does many things, including international service, extremely well, attendance is one area in which we lag behind the rest of the district. Hopefully, we can all take a look at our own attendance and help get us out of the bottom half of the clubs in the district." Dave noted that Harding Shinn, who is celebrating 44 years of perfect attendance, attributes his record to good health, his enjoyment of the fellowship at the Friday meetings, his making up when he was not able to attend on Fridays, and his belief that this is a commitment we all made when we joined Rotary. Congratulations to Harding! Dave reminded the members that there are many ways to make up including: 1. Attending any other Rotary Club meeting within 14 days before or 14 days after the meeting missed. (There are 15 clubs in the Charlotte area and there is a meeting each day of the week.) 2. Attending a monthly STAR meeting 3. Working on any community service project, attending a Rotary committee meeting, or attending a district assembly or district conference meeting. 4 Going on a club sponsored mission trip. 5. Making up on line via EClub. Short Month; Packed Rotarian Magazine February is a short month, but there is nothing short about the February Rotarian. However, it is recognized that some members may prefer the option of paying those dues over three monthly installments instead of one quarterly lump sum, subject to the following conditions: 1. Use of an automated facility to make these payments such as bank draft or automatic payment via online banking is highly encouraged so that payments arrive consistently at a predictable time. 2. All charges reflected on a quarterly billing statement must be paid in full during the same quarter the statement is received. For example, dues and charges reflected on the January statement must be paid in full by March 31. The expectation is that a minimum of one third of the total amount due will be received in each of the months of January, February and March. Alternatively, any non-recurring extra charges could be added to the January payment with one third of the dues paid during the last two months of the quarter. Please direct any questions to Ed King or club president Ranjity Rawlley. DilWorth Noting Dilworth's Donor Sponsors Navy Veteran Dewey Stanley on April 18 Flight of Honor The father of one of our members contributed $500 to the Rotary District 7680 Flight of Honor service project. That donation by a father, who himself is a World War II veteran, will sponsor Dewey Stanley from Charlotte. He is a Navy veteran and was part of the invasion force that landed troops on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He is grateful for the generosity of this Dilworth club member. If each member would contribute at least $10 toward this project, Dilworth South End Rotary could sponsor a second veteran to join the 100 who will go to Washington, DC on a charter flight for a visit to the World War II memorial. If you donate through Dilworth Charities, your donation is tax deductible under the federal tax code. Please mark the memo line of your check Flight of Honor. Letter On Peru Handmade Cards, Other Projects Dear Ranjit, I would first like to thank you for the warm reception your club gave us when we visited you last fall with our Creaciones Angel Handmade Cards from Peru. That sales campaign was very successful. We sold over 6,200 cards, which generated enough income to guarantee the girls' paydays through most of the first half of 2009. We're back in Peru now, and I wish you could have been here too to see the looks on the girls' faces when they learned of these results. They are very grateful for the support of clubs like yours. Since we spend 7 months a year here in Alto Cayma, we have many other projects besides the cardshop which we weren't able to tell you about in our last visit for lack of time. When we return to the Charlotte area in the spring, we'd like to give your club a full program on all our projects. Here's a preview of what we'd be talking about: * The settlement of Alto Cayma is an impoverished community on the outskirts of the city of Arequipa, Peru, populated by 30,000 people who have migrated here to try to make a better life for themselves and their families. * Since the visit of our district's GSE Team here in 2000, no area of the world has received more of District 7680's attention than has Alto Cayma. * Over 15 of our district's clubs have been involved in 10 different Matching Grant projects with a total value of approximately $335,000. * Thirty-eight (38) Rotarians (including 3 District Governors) from 11 clubs in our district have traveled to Alto Cayma to see these projects first hand. * In addition to these projects, last year alone nearly $120,000 of non-Rotary money was channeled to Alto Cayma to support other projects which complement those funded by Rotary. * These funds have been used to help the people with nutrition, shelter, potable water, medical and dental care , community security, reducing family violence, vocational training, education, recreation and guidance to youth. As you can see, our projects are broader in scope than we've ever talked about even at Dilworth Rotary, the club that's closest to what we do. I believe that our story is an inspiring example of the global reach of Rotary and its ability to change lives in every corner of the world. Please let us know if you have any open program dates in April or May when we could come speak to you. A prompt response would be appreciated, as we'll only be home those two months and we're trying to visit approximately 20 clubs in that brief time span. Yours in Rotary Service, Jim Hintz Charlotte University City Rotary Club Club Trainers, Upcoming Leaders Should Attend Leadership Institute The next Rotary Leadership Institute session in District 7680 will be Saturday, Feb. 21, from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Mitchell College in Mooresville. David's classification is training consultant and his sponsor is Kay May. David is a former member of the Vestavia Hills Rotary Club near Birmingham, Ala. He was very active in the Vestavia Hills club, serving as chairman- corporate sponsors for the club's annual Roast, and serving on the 4-Way Test Committee, the International Projects Committee, and the Community Project Committee. He was a Rotary Guest Program speaker at 12 clubs annually in District 6860 and has been a guest speaker at the Dorchester Rotary Club, Dorset, United Kingdom. Some of our members have vacation homes in the mountains, and some have them at the beach, but David and his wife Jan have a vacation cottage in Dorset southwest of London in the U.K. He visits the Dorchester Club often on his vacations at the Dorset Cottage. When he and Jan are not vacationing there, it is available for lease. If you are interested in vacationing there, Gaol Cottage, Cerne Abbas, has its own website www.dorsetcottage.org/. It was a former jail and quarters for the jailer. Since David and Jan have owned it, they and the cottage have been featured on BBC and in newspapers. His father's profession as a Methodist minister indirectly led to the Dorset Cottage. His father periodically traveled to Oxford to participate in an international Wesleyan organization and those trips exposed David to England. He said he fell in love England at the age of 12 went he first glimpsed Southampton through on a porthole in the ship on which the family traveled. David is a member of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, the American Society for Training & Development and is a Myers Park Methodist Church volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He has received the Blue Chip Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Small Business Person of the Year from the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, the Emil Hess Humanitarian Award from Parisian Inc., and the Marketing/Customer Service Award from Mitel, Inc. David enjoys cycling, sailing and hiking. He said he has participated in four "century" (100 miles) rides and eight "half century" rides. He and Jan have two adult daughters, Celia and Amanda and one adult son, Drew. DilWorth Noting Club Nears Funding Second WW II Veteran Our club is within $40 of raising enough money to fund a second veteran for the April 18th Flight of Honor. If we can raise that and an additional $200, it will fund a guardian to go on the flight to assist the veterans who may need assistance with wheelchairs. One of our members could apply to be the guardian our club funds. Contributions, if made through our club's Dilworth Charities, are tax deductible. Just mark the memo line of the check: Flight of Honor. Rotary Foundation "50/50" One Time And Benefactor Opportunities By James Stump Past District Governor Over many years, through various fund raising projects and the generosity of many past Dilworth Rotarians, your club has accumulated unassigned Rotary Foundation "Recognition Points." For a very limited time in order to achieve/exceed our $7,200 annual giving goal for 2008-2009, your club's Foundation Committee and its Board are offering two ONE-TIME ONLY ways to become either a new or Multiple Paul Harris Fellow. These new Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) recognition opportunities are available for you to recognize others such as a spouse, parent (living or deceased), a child, a friend, or yourself. We are offering TWO very attractive options: (1) a "one-time only, once-in-a-lifetime only" opportunity for the first 10 Dilworth Rotarians who create either a full new or multiple PHF, the opportunity to do so for $500 IN CASH/CHECK. The club would then apply 500 recognition points creating your new Paul Harris Fellowship for the beneficiary of your choice (generating additional new cash for the Rotary Foundation that otherwise has not been forthcoming to help us reach/exceed our goal of $7200 for this Rotary year); (2) a second "one-time only, once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity for those members who are WITHIN $500 of finishing either their first or a multiple PHF with a 50/50 "match" for their cash/check and our club's points. As examples: A. Dilworth Rotarian "Bill" is a new Rotarian and has not yet started his plan to become a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF). Bill gives $500 to the Rotary Foundation and Dilworth Rotary transfers 500 available club points to Bill. Bill will become a new Paul Harris Fellow. B. Dilworth Rotarian "Kim" is already a Paul Harris Fellow and has made $600 in actual cash contributions toward a second PHF. For the second PHF, she would have a remaining balance of $400 before reaching the $1000 required. Under our one-time 50/50 option, Kim contributes $200 in cash and the club would offer 200 points and Kim can create a new PHF (she plans to name her husband which is OK). C. Dilworth Rotarian "Martha" has $400 towards her first PHF. To be within $500 of completing her PHF (thus eligible to receive the 50/50 match), Martha contributes $100 (to get her to the $500 eligibility threshold) and then another $250 (which the club matches with points). Martha becomes a PHF. If you have questions, please call Jim Stump (704 843-6755) or any of the other members of the club's Foundation Committee (David Hodgkins, Joe Morris, Frank Kiker, Tony Thompson, Chuck Lapp, Ernie Rider, and Dennis McGarry). Equally exciting, your club is also asking you to consider becoming a Rotary Foundation Benefactor (Rotary Foundation Benefactors are individuals who pledge $1000 or more to the Rotary Foundation after their death). There are currently 14 Foundation Benefactors in our club and we would like to create at least 10 more new Benefactors. President Ranjit has asked all Dilworth Rotarians to consider becoming a Rotary Foundation Benefactor. Foundation Benefactors support the Permanent Fund (the endowment) of the Rotary Foundation and are recognized in a very special way comparable to that of becoming a Paul Harris Fellow. President Ranjit, your Board, and your Foundation Committee are planning a very special Rotary Foundation program in April to recognize the new Paul Harris Fellows and the new Foundation Benefactors. The individual recognitions will be very meaningful for both the recipients and their families/guests. If you want to seize a great opportunity to become a Paul Harris Fellow, recognize someone dear or yourself as a PHF, or become a Foundation Benefactor, NOW is the time to STEP UP! Please consider what YOU can do now to help support and strengthen the "heart and soul of Rotary", YOUR Rotary Foundation. Lives depend on it! In addition to this year's fund-raising by selling BBQ tickets, Rotarians as well as other individuals will be given the opportunity to make contributions to Dilworth Charities. Funds from these contributions will be used to provide up to 400 homeless individuals lunch on Monday, April 6th, 2009 at the Urban Ministry Center. In order to feed 400 people we must collect $2,133 in contributions. These contributions will be deductible. Below are the BBQ Planning Committee's recommendations for 2009 BBQ fundraiser. The basic format will be the same as last year. * BBQ will be held on Friday, April 3, 2009, from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. (actual work hours for Rotarians). * Serving hours to the public will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. * Ticket for Office Pack $16.00; One lb. Time Running Out for Rotary Foundation "50/50" One Time Opportunities By James Stump Past District Governor We have had a great response from our club members with 9 or 10 members committing to create new or finish exist Paul Harris Fellow commitments using the the 50/50 one-time match program. I also indicated that there may be room for a few more folks to take advantage of this special opportunity to create a new PHF for essentially half-price (using their $500 and the club's 500 points). All interested were asked to get their checks in this week to Jim Stump so that we have time to get the recognition items back from Rotary International in time for the special April recognition program. I also indicated that 4 individuals had agreed to become Rotary Foundation Benefactors. This is great, too. To fully meet our club goals, we'd like to have 10 new Paul Harris Fellows and 10 new Rotary Foundation Benefactors. I asked The Dilworthian editor to print the details of the offer one more time before the opportunity ends. Club Dues Policy for Your Review The club's leadership asked that the dues policy be printed one more time. See below. Club dues are due and payable quarterly upon receipt of statement.
