From gunter4283 at bellsouth.net Thu Aug 6 20:14:16 2009 From: gunter4283 at bellsouth.net (Lamar Gunter) Date: Thu, 6 Aug 2009 23:14:16 -0400 Subject: [Dilworthian] Aug. 7 issue Message-ID: <01ca01ca170d$367a5140$a36ef3c0$@net> The Dilworthian Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary Club August 7, 2009 Please Record Your Service Hours Your club leadership would appreciate it if you would record your service hours each week when you have service hours. Apparently only a few members are remembering to record their hours. With the East Boulevard cleanup, club committee work, and USO volunteer service, there should be significantly more than the 85 hours showing for July. The new Website created by Richard Pockat makes it easier than it was to record service. To log your hours go to our Website (www.charlottedilworthrotary.org/) and look down the right side of the home page. In the box that has the dashboard and just below it you will see Click Here to Log Volunteer Hours. Click on it and it will bring up a sign-in page. Put dilworth in the space for user name and service in the space for password. and click on sign in. It will bring up a page with Rotary Service underlined. Click on that and it will bring up the form below. Log Hours Here * Member * Date / / [Today] Service Project Committee Service Description * Hours Fill it in. If you have multiple dates for the same service project or committee service, after you record the first one click on new and it will bring up the same form with what you filled in. Just change the date and the number of hours (if that changes) and the description if that changes. Click on new and that action records it and you are ready to fill it out for another date for the same project or committee service. If you are changing from recording service project time to committee service time, you have to change the designation and delete the one that doesn?t apply. Then record the dates, description and number of hours. If we have a fairly accurate accounting of service time, Lamar Gunter will be able to use it in publicity for the club. DilWorth Noting Matthews Rotary Will Conduct Its 5th Annual Bluegrass Festival (from new District 7680 website) The Matthews Rotary Club will conduct its 5th Annual Bluegrass Festival on Saturday, November 7, 2009 in Stumptown Park, located in Historic Downtown Matthews. In honor of Veteran?s Day, a portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the North Carolina National Guard Soldiers and Airmen Assistance Fund. Throughout the State of North Carolina, Army and Air Guardsmen are called to mobilization duty for our country, or our state for natural disasters and other required duties. In the absence of their Soldier or Airman, families are dealing with the challenging issues of day-to-day life. Sometimes our Soldiers and Airmen suffer job loss, illness, unexpected expenses, or disasters, which place them in financial need. The Fund supplements financial emergencies that occur within families that have a parent deployed and helps them through these difficult times. A portion of the proceeds will also be distributed to these local not-for-profit organizations: Christ Our Shepherd Ministries, providing services and programs for single female parents including childcare and day camps; Levine Senior Center, empowering seniors to celebrate living through developing relations, increasing knowledge and encouraging activities; Libros For Learning, providing books to establish libraries in rural cities in Mexico; Matthews Health Clinic, providing free health care to low-income, uninsured residents of Mecklenburg and Union Counties For information regarding sponsor and advertising opportunities, contact Bill Rhyne at 704-844-4082, therhynes at carolina.rr.com. Tony Thompson sponsored her for membership. Whitney?s journey to becoming a Rotarian began when she was about 13. She started taking private German lessons at that age and that prompted her interest in the Rotary summer exchange program. The summer between her junior and senior years of high school, for a month her family hosted a girl her age from a small village south of Stuttgart, Germany. After that month ended, she flew home with her for a month in Germany. She said that experience drove her decision to attend Davidson, not only for its other great qualities, but because at the time it offered a year-long study program for college juniors at the University of Wuerzburg. She spent a calendar year in Germany, the first month with a host family, and the rest of the year living in a dorm in Wuerzburg. After Whitney had been out of college for a couple of years, she started working as a tax accountant for Dellinger & Deese, PLLC, a local public accounting firm. She did not have an undergraduate accounting degree and wasn't eligible to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. In 2001, she took a leave of absence and moved to Columbia, SC, where she attended the University of South Carolina and earned a Master of Taxation. Whitney said, ?I took all the necessary prerequisites simultaneously and after 15 months and two very hot summers, I came back to Charlotte and passed the CPA exam. While I was gone, Dellinger & Deese had merged into BDO Seidman, LLP and I stayed there until April 2007.? She worked in a tax consulting practice at Moore & Van Allen for six months and then joined Cherry Bekaert & Holland in November 2007. . As a tax manager, she does mostly business tax compliance and consulting. She has family Rotary background. Her father was president of the Jonesboro Rotary club, and her brother is a member of the Sanford Rotary Club. She was a member of the Top of the Week Rotary Club until recently. Whitney loves to travel, run, read, and cook. She said, ?I run with my best friend a couple of mornings a week, which we have been doing off and on for almost seven years. I went to Hawaii for 10 days in May, which was a great trip, and I'm trying to figure out where I want to go next!? DilWorth Noting Dilworthians Surpass Rotary Foundation Goal Dilworth Rotarians have done it once again by greatly surpassing the club's Rotary Foundation giving goal for 2008-2009. Against a club goal of $7,200.00, Dilworth Rotarians contributed $13,562.50. This is 188% of goal! Club members contributed another $1,050.00 in restricted giving, thus bringing the total to $14,612.50. Total giving from the Dilworth South End Club members ranks among the TOP 10 clubs within District 7680, according to the Foundation's year-end (6/30/09) giving summary. Thanks to all Dilworth South End Rotarians who helped to make this noteworthy giving a reality once more. The Rotary International Foundation is the "heart and soul" of Rotary and our club members have once again gone the extra miles for OUR charity, the Rotary International Foundation. The fingerprinting and background checks are required because the USO Center is inside security at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Every time a member of the USO team goes to work a shift at the USO, he has to go through security as if he were going to board an airplane. Our USO team includes John Barringer, Lamar Gunter, David Hodgkins, Pete Johnston, Bob Lyons, Ernie Rider, Harding Shinn, and Lee Wensil. In the Center, our volunteers handle various aspects of operating the Center to serve more than 200 military members, retirees and their guests each day. They staff the registration desk at the entrance to the center; make sandwiches and coffee; stock the cooler shelves with soft drinks; pick up donated food items from airport vendors; sweep, dust and vacuum; they check out video games for guests to play; and they answer lots questions. Service members ask about hotels if they are stranded overnight, about plane schedules, and where other USOs are located. One question they often hear is what does USO stand for and how did it get started. The initials stand for United Services Organization, although it is known simply as the USO. The USO was formed in 1941 in response to a request from President Franklin D. Roosevelt who determined it would be best if private organizations handled the on-leave recreation needs of the rapidly growing U.S. armed forces. Roosevelt?s call to action led six civilian agencies to coordinate their civilian war efforts and resources to form a new organization ? the USO (United Service Organizations). The six civilian agencies were the Salvation Army, Young Men?s Christian Association, Young Women?s Christian Association, National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association and the National Jewish Welfare Board. The USO was incorporated in New York February 4, 1941. What do the Dilworthians get out of volunteering at the USO? Lee Wensil probably said it best: ?I volunteer for a good many things, but there is nothing more rewarding than the USO. When you talk with these young and retired military men and women, you cannot help but feel pride and thankful that these have stepped forward to serve this country.? Pete Johnston said, "I run into so many people these days, especially young people, who are opinionated but uninformed. The troops we serve at the USO are refreshing! It's great to know that America still has young people who have more to offer their country than just their opinions! These are our true Patriots and it's a privilege to serve them! " David Hodgins said, ?I look forward to my shifts at the USO each time I go- It is one of the most rewarding things I do! It never fails to amaze me that the military people I meet always thank us for volunteering. We should, as I do, thank them! To see how much they appreciate the conversation, the stories, and the warm feelings that they get while at the Center is extremely rewarding!? Bob Lyons said something similar to David, ?I marvel at how they always thank me for giving them a little food, something to drink and a place to rest........after all they do for me, my family and our country.? There are about 300 USO volunteers, some of them Rotarians, but our Club is the only one that made USO volunteer service one of its club projects. If you think you might like to volunteer, you will have to put your name on a waiting list because the USO is limited by the Airport to 300 security badges. There is a waiting list to be a volunteer, but it is a volunteer job worth waiting to get.
