Rotarians Asked to Welcome Home Rotary District 7680?s Flight of Honor The Rotary District 7680 Flight of Honor Steering Committee is asking Charlotte area Rotarians to be at Concourse D exit on the ticketing level of Charlotte Douglas International Airport April 18 between 8 and 8:30 p.m. to welcome home the World War II veterans. Please wear your Rotary shirts and hats if you have them. The charter flight for the 120 veterans is expected to arrive between 8 and 8:30 p.m. In addition to the veterans, persons on the flight will include District Governor Bob Wilson, 40 guardians who each have accompanied three veterans during the day, sponsors, film makers, and members of the media. The 40 guardians were needed because many of the veterans use wheelchairs, walkers and canes. Experience in previous flights sponsored by HonorAir shows the need for one guardian for every three veterans. Because this flight could only accommodate 120 veterans, there already is a waiting list of more than 20 veterans who could not go on this flight. The steering committee hopes it will be able to organize at least one more flight. Past District Governor Mitzi Ellis and Mary Ellis are co-chairs of the Steering Committee. Treasurers are Kelly Morris and Steve Driscoll. Other chairs are Sandy Osborne, administrative; Richard Theokas, guardians; and Steve Brandt, public relations. Other committee members include: John Barringer, Tom Burgess, Jim Calder, Donny Clement, Lamar Gunter, Chuck Kibler, Dave McKnight, Charlie Peninger, Lisa Qualls, and Jack Setzer. Sponsors include: Rotary Clubs of Rotary District 7680, Theragenics, former Senators Bob and Elizabeth Dole, US Airways, USO of North Carolina?s Charlotte Center, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, O?Charley?s Restaurant on South Tryon Street, Associated Posters Inc., Adam Owen, Creative Director of Fairway Outdoor Advertising, Harris Teeter, Hampton Inn in Mooresville, and American Legion Post 262 in Charlotte. The Hintzes spend 7-8 months a year in Alto Cayma, working with the people there on various projects. They recently returned from Peru with 4,000 cards to sell during the spring season, so they will have a wide variety of cards for Mother's Day, graduation, and other spring/summer occasions to choose from without having to wait or pay a shipping charge. In addition to selling individual cards, they are featuring gift packs of 6 cards in an acryllic box for $25. These are a really different gift idea for family, friends, and business associates. 100% of the proceeds from these sales go back to the girls who do this beautiful work. This project is now providing full-time employment to 18 young women, so be sure to bring your checkbooks and help the people of Alto Cayma help themselves through their own honest efforts. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Rotary District 7680 Flight of Honor gave 120 World War II veterans a day to remember as they were honored with a free trip to D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial and other sites of interest in Washington. The veterans had such a great time talking with their comrades and enjoying the send-off and welcome home they received that many said they could not find words to express their feelings. The USO at Charlotte Douglas International Airport provided a send off with doughnuts and volunteers waving American flags. When they returned Saturday evening there were more volunteers waving flags as they exited the US Air chartered plane. When they exited the secure area there were family, friends and Rotarians there to greet them with flags, applause, banners, hugs from children and grandchildren, and sincere thanks for what they had done for the world during the war. New Law Allows Veterans in Not in Uniform To Salute During Flag Centered Events Occasionally people in civilian clothes have saluted the flag during the pledge of allegiance at our meetings and that was once improper protocol. Changes in federal law have made it permissible for veterans of military service to salute instead of placing their hands over their heart while facing the flag during the Pledge of Allegiance. ?The military salute is a unique gesture of respect that marks those who have served in our nation?s armed forces,? said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake. ?This provision allows the application of that honor in all events involving our nation?s flag.? He also likes live music and is learning to play an acoustic guitar. President?s Corner By Ranjit Rawlley Last week was my proudest as a Rotarian. In the midst of an economic recession unlike any that we have seen since the great depression. With a Tsunami of bad news.. Bankruptcies and the potential loss of such Iconic companies as Chrysler, GM and Wachovia. With bad news from every corner and unemployment rates in the double digits. Housing prices down 50 % in some parts of the country. The Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary club created a Tsunami of a different kind. A Tsunami of good news. A Tsunami that will help provide clean water to those who lack it; housing for those without it; free some from the scourge of polio; and provide skills to some other to help feed their families. Rest assured the money raised will be put to good use. To those 14 new Paul Harris Fellows and four new benefactors and your Rotary sponsors, I thank you and salute you. I also salute the Club and those that have paved the way and created the "Rotary Spirit" that pervades the club. This same spirit has created almost $325,000 in donations over our history for the Rotary Foundation. Jim Stump ,Chair of the Foundation Committee, told me that he did not recollect a time when we had created more Paul Harris Fellows and benefactors at one sitting. I would be remiss if I did not thank Jim Stump Chair and his Rotary foundation committee: Vice Chair Chuck Lapp, Joe Morris, Ernie Rider, Frank Kiker, Dennis McGarry, David Hodgkins and Tony Thompson. Your fellow Rotarians salute you.
