From lgunter at catevo.com Thu Oct 16 13:58:37 2008 From: lgunter at catevo.com (Gunter, Lamar) Date: Thu, 16 Oct 2008 16:58:37 -0400 Subject: [Dilworthian] Oct. 17 issue Message-ID: The Dilworthian (Issues posted at www.charlottedilworthrotary.org) October 17, 2008 Club Supports Attendance At Rotary Foundation Banquet By Jim Stump Past District Governor The District 7680 Rotary International Foundation Banquet is rapidly approaching and YOU are invited!! Scheduled for Monday, November 10, 1008 at the new Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center in Concord (on Bruton Smith Boulevard approximately midway between the Speedway and Concord Mills Mall), this event is always an exciting time to learn about YOUR FOUNDATION, but also to celebrate the work of the Foundation, both locally and in other countries. We are extremely fortunate to have as this year's speakers Rotary Foundation Trustee Carolyn Jones and Rotary Peace Center Graduate Shai Tamari of Israel. Trustee Jones is a past District Governor and has held many key Rotary Leadership positions. She is a graduate of Yale Law School and was an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Alaska for 23 years. Of special interest, she organized international support for the "Children of Russia" program to help young victims of leukemia and cancers of the blood caused by the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. Carolyn's unforgettable story of bringing healing, compassion, and love to the children of Russia is a very compelling testimony of the power of the Rotary Foundation Tamari, a Jewish man born in Jerusalem and a veteran of the Israeli armed forces, spent his Rotary Peace Fellowship at the Rotary Peace Center shared by UNC and Duke Universities. In May, he completed a Master's Degree in History, Arabic Language, and Conflict Resolution. Tamari hopes to use his Arabic language skills, and his studies of peace at the Rotary Peace Center, to help find a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Tamari has recently begun working as a Legislative Assistant in Middle East affairs for U.S. Representative Jim Moran of Virginia. This District-wide event is open to all Rotarians. This is a superior opportunity, especially for newer and younger Rotarians, to learn more about the heart and soul of Rotary, the Rotary Foundation. I hope for a strong turnout from Dilworth South End Rotarians. Reservations are already coming in and the deadline is approaching soon. To make reservations, please call me, Jim Stump at (704) 843-6755. This is a great Rotary event and one that you will not want to miss! To encourage and support attendance, the club will cancel a future regularly scheduled meeting to free up funds allowing the club to underwrite the meal cost ($40) of any club member attending the Rotary Foundation Banquet. Spouses and guests are welcomed, but the club can underwrite the cost of the members' ticket only. Please call me if you have any questions. DilWorth Noting Seed Program Will Have Its Day at United Nations John Batcha >From District 7680 Newsletter North Mecklenburg club Rotarian John Batcha will deliver a message of hope for the hungry in the hallowed General Assembly room of the United Nations on Nov. 8, 2008. Rotarians were involved in establishing the international organization following World War II, and a Rotary representative maintains a permanent office in the building. The cooperation between the two organizations is commemorated annually with Rotary International/ United Nations Day. One of the UN's initiatives is aimed at aleviating hunger. Batcha, who worked in the seed industry for 28 years, established the non-profit "Seed Programs Inc." in 1998 that has to date distributed 11 million packets of seed to needy people in 60 countries. When he joined the North Mecklenburg Rotary Club, he got the club involved by establishing a "Rotarians Sowing Seeds to Fight World Hunger" committee. The effort was selected as District 7680's Showcase Project in 2006-2007, and was also showcased at the RI annual convention in Salt Lake City. A UN representative invited Batcha to present the program on RI/UN Day. Batcha will present a 15 minute PowerPoint presentation about the program, a UN administrator will talk about UN hunger relief programs for 15 minutes, and there will be 15 minutes for questions. About 1,300 Rotarians from around the globe are expected to attend, including RI President D.K. Lee and UN Secretary General Ban Ky Moon. Batcha noted that Rotary donations have financed distribution of seed thus far to 15 countries around the world. All of the seeds are donated by seed companies, while the organization pays for packaging and shipping it abroad. Batcha noted that it's a tremendously cost-effective means of philanthropy. A donation of just $300 provides seed with the potential of producing 5,000 pounds of vegetables. Progam Oct. 24 Will Honor Club's 60 Years Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary Club will soon be 60 years old and Oct. 24 the program will be a short stroll down memory lane in observance of six decades of service to the community and the world. The building where we meet, the former Nebel Knitting Mill, may well have played host to meetings that led up to the founding of Dilworth Rotary Club in 1948. Mr. Nebel, owner of the mill, was one of the founding members of the club. On March 26th, 1948, Woodford A. Kennedy, a long time member of the Charlotte Rotary Club, wrote a letter to John Paul Lucas, Jr., then President of the Charlotte Rotary Club, suggesting the formation of a Rotary Club in the Dilworth section of Charlotte. J. Aubrey Chrisman and Thomas A. Aldridge, also long time members of the Charlotte Rotary Club, joined in the movement and performed notable work. The movement received great impetus when Everett C. Bierman, Govenor of the 194th District, Rotary International, advocated creation of Dilworth Rotary before the Club Assembly of the Charlotte Rotary Club and again before the entire club at the time of his official visit. John Paul Lucas, Jr, was appointed as Special Representative and did an outstanding job in steering the proposal through the many necessary steps. The work of David G. Welton, the new president of the Charlotte Rotary Club, his board of directors, and finally the overwhelming vote of more than one hundred and seventy-five members of the Charlotte Rotary Club, were deciding factor s and assured the formation of a new club. The organizational meeting was held on the night of October 4th, 1948 with District Governor Everett C. Bierman presiding. A large delegation of Rotarians from the Charlotte Rotary Club, the sponsoring club, was present. The Charter Presentation Banquet was held at Chaise Mantel, December 3rd, 1948. Governor Everett C. Bierman presented the charter. President Woodie Kennedy accepted for the Dilworth Rotary Club. Aubrey Chrisman and Woodford Kennedy both became early presidents of the club. John Paul Lucas and David Welton later became members of Dilworth Rotary and David played piano for our singing when we met in the YWCA on Park Road. Paul was also noted for musical talent; he was an expert whistler. The club name was changed to Charlotte Dilworth South End in 2003, to reflect the neighborhood and area that it serves. DilWorth Noting Two Yearly Club Projects Are Just Ahead Director Gary Barrett reminds us that two of the club's annual projects loom just around the corner - the Crisis Assistance Ministry Coat Drive and the Salvation Army Bell Ringing for the collection kettles. Gary asks that members purchase new coats or bring gently used coats for the coat drive. He suggests you pair up with a fellow Rotarian and sign up for a stint or stints of ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. Sign up sheets will be available no later than the Oct. 31 meeting. Next Club Social Set for Nov. 13 Corey Wilhelm asks members to mark Nov. 13 on their calendars for the next club social. It will be held at Greek Isles Restaurant, 200 E. Bland St. Dinner reservations are set for 6:30 p.m., but Corey says arrive at 6 p.m. for drinks. Meals and drinks are Dutch treat. All Rotarians can take great pride in the achievements of our Foundation, from our work for polio eradication to our Rotary Centers for International Studies to projects that improve lives every day. And now, we are building on those efforts through our Future Vision Plan. As a Nigerian, I have seen how The Rotary Foundation is making a difference in my homeland. As Rotary Foundation chair, I have the opportunity to see our Foundation in action throughout the world. I can assure you that your generous contributions to the Annual Programs Fund and Permanent Fund are doing good in myriad ways. But our contributions to the Foundation go beyond financial support. Rotarian doctors and dentists are serving as volunteers to bring health care to remote, underserved areas. Rotarian families are welcoming Ambassadorial Scholars and Group Study Exchange teams into their homes, establishing lasting international friendships. And millions of children are receiving the precious polio vaccine during National Immunization Days that Rotarians help organize, promote, and carry out with an eye on good stewardship practices. As you observe Rotary Foundation Month, keep in mind the many ways that you can contribute. Through our combined support, the Foundation will continue to do good in the world for decades to come.
